How to Use a Tablet as a Wireless Second Screen Offline (No Apps Required)

Turn your iPad, Android tablet, or Kindle Fire into an auxiliary reference display for your PC without installing mobile apps or needing internet access.

Many developers, writers, students, and financial traders have an iPad, Samsung Galaxy Tab, or Amazon Fire tablet resting on their desk and want to use it as an auxiliary monitor. While dedicated dual-monitor software like Duet Display, Spacedesk, or Apple Sidecar exists, they come with substantial drawbacks:

  • Requiring proprietary kernel drivers or companion apps from Google Play / Apple App Store.
  • Locking key features behind costly monthly subscriptions.
  • Demanding constant internet connectivity for license checks.
  • Failing when working across incompatible operating systems (e.g. Windows PC to iPad).

ScreenTask offers a clean, zero-bloat alternative: turn any tablet into a wireless reference monitor over your local Wi-Fi network using nothing more than your tablet’s built-in web browser (Safari or Chrome).

Best Use Cases for Tablet Second Displays

While browser-based mirroring is not intended for competitive gaming, it is the premier solution for auxiliary reference tasks:

  1. Code & API Documentation: Keep developer documentation, StackOverflow tabs, or database schema reference visible on your tablet while coding on your primary screen.
  2. Server & Terminal Monitoring: Watch live terminal logs, Docker stats, or build pipelines on your tablet.
  3. Tutorial Videos & Online Lectures: Play training tutorials on the tablet while replicating steps in your development environment.
  4. Chat & Communication: Keep Slack, Discord, or project boards open without sacrificing primary desktop space.

Step 1: Start ScreenTask on Your Primary PC

  1. Download the standalone release from the ScreenTask Download Hub.
  2. Launch ScreenTask.exe.
  3. In the IP dropdown, select your local Wi-Fi IPv4 address (e.g. 192.168.1.75).
  4. Select the display you wish to stream (Screen 1 or Screen 2).
  5. Set Port to 7070 (or 9000).
  6. Set Refresh Rate to:
    • 500 ms (2 FPS) for reading static documentation and code.
    • 200 ms (5 FPS) for responsive window scrolling and live logs.
  7. Click Start Server.

Step 2: Open the Stream on Your Tablet Browser

Ensure your tablet is connected to the same Wi-Fi router (or Windows Mobile Hotspot) as your PC:

On iPad (iOS Safari):

  1. Open Safari.
  2. Type http://<YOUR-PC-IP>:7070 into the address bar.
  3. Once the stream loads, tap the Share button (box with an upward arrow).
  4. Tap Add to Home Screen. This creates a dedicated icon that launches the stream in a clean, address-bar-free window.

On Android Tablets (Google Chrome / Samsung Internet):

  1. Open Chrome.
  2. Navigate to http://<YOUR-PC-IP>:7070.
  3. Tap the three dots menu at the top-right corner.
  4. Select Add to Home screen or toggle Fullscreen mode.

Step 3: Optimizing Text Sharpness and Battery Life

  1. Keep Tablet Screen Awake: In your tablet’s settings (Display $\rightarrow$ Screen Timeout), set sleep to Never or 30 minutes while plugged in.
  2. Adjust Windows Scaling: If code or text looks too small on your tablet, open Windows Settings $\rightarrow$ Display and adjust the display scaling to 125% or 150%.
  3. Landscape Orientation: Lock your tablet’s orientation to Landscape mode for a true 16:9 or 16:10 secondary display experience.
